Create one large-scale abstract landscape painting. Work side-by-side with the instructor and fellow students to develop a landscape from beginning to finish, while exploring a variety of acrylic painting techniques using one surface. Although, we will be working together, you will be encouraged to make your own compositional choices. Discuss how color can be used for both spatial and emotive effects, and experiment with mark making as simplified texture. This class is taught using acrylics, but is open to oil painters if they use non-toxic mediums and cleaners.
FEE: $170 / MAC MEMBERS: $153

We will discuss how Impressionism marked a shift towards abstraction, and study the transition from strict observation to an expression of the artist’s inner world. By discovering why major artists such as Manet, Cezanne, Monet, Gauguin, and Matisse made conceptual and formal decisions, we can better understand the origins of Expressionism as a set of attitudes. Along with these discussions we will create our own expressionist paintings by working from life and photographs. In this course, you will complete studies of a still-life and a landscape. We will immerse ourselves in the possibilities color has to offer, and embrace new ways of visualizing the world.
